How do you care for woolen slippers properly?

Gottstein slippers are made from 100% finest virgin wool and are rolled and felted in pure Tyrolean mountain water. In the process of fulling and felting, the wool fibres are compressed by the action of water and heat to form a hard-wearing fulling fabric or felt. Wool is a natural, hard-wearing and very easy-care material.

The general rule for the care of our wool slippers is:

Tips & tricks for the care of our slippers in detail

Depending on the upper material and sole, we recommend different procedures for the care of our slippers made of felt, whale fabric and lambskin.

Felt slippers
  • Felt is a textile surface made of parallelised wool fibres. The scale-like structure of the sheep's wool felts under the influence of heat and pressure. Felt is robust, durable and hard-wearing.
  • Our felt slippers are felted by hand over a last and then milled in pure mountain water. Therefore, our felt slippers should never be completely soaked!
  • Felt slippers can be freed from coarse dirt and dust by simply tapping them out.
  • You are welcome to air out your felt slippers in the fresh air from time to time to get rid of odours. Please avoid direct sunlight. The sun's rays can be extremely strong and permanently change the colour of your felt slippers. This is by no means a quality defect, but comes because the natural colours are not meant for long exposure to sunlight.
  • Rough stains on the upper can be removed with a soft cotton cloth or a soft sponge.
  • Stubborn stains can also be removed from the outer fabric with a soft cotton cloth or a soft sponge in combination with a little mild soap suds or washing-up liquid.
  • Due to the processing of high-quality wools, pilling can occasionally occur on the outer material. The small pilling nodules can be removed with sharp scissors or a disposable razor and then brushed out.

Walk slippers

  • In fulling fabric, a knitted tube forms the base. During fulling, the knitted fabric springs under the influence of heat, moisture and pressure and forms a veiled, felt-like appearance.
  • Walk fabric slippers are softer and more flexible than wool felt slippers.
  • You are welcome to pat out your woolen slippers from time to time to remove dust and dirt.
  • Coarse dirt can easily be removed with a soft cotton cloth or a soft brush.
  • Walk fabric slippers can be washed gently at 30°C on the wool wash cycle if they are very dirty.
  • Please make sure that you do not wash your woolen slippers too often. This is because washing causes the wool to lose its valuable lanolin and thus its positive properties.
  • Please do not use fabric softener!
  • In rare cases, the surface of the wool may become pilled during washing. You can easily shave off these nodules with sharp scissors or a disposable razor.

  • Our knitted slippers are formed by hand over a last and then rolled. Therefore, you should not wash the cottage socks, otherwise they will lose their shape.
  • You can remove dirt and dust from your slippers by simply beating them.
  • You can also air out your slippers in the fresh air from time to time to neutralise odours. Avoid direct sunlight. The sun's rays are very strong and can permanently change the colour of your hut socks.

Wool sneakers

  • Our woolen sneakers are made from fuller's wool and are therefore very robust.
  • Dust and dirt can be removed by simply tapping them out.
  • Coarse dirt can be removed with a soft cotton cloth or a soft brush.
  • Wool sneakers can be washed at 30°C on the wool cycle if they are very dirty.
  • Please be careful not to wash your woollen sneakers too often. Washing loses the valuable lanolin in the wool and thus changes its basic properties.
  • Do not use fabric softener when washing!
  • In rare cases, the surface of the wool may become pilled after washing. You can easily shave off these nodules with sharp scissors or a disposable razor.

Lambskin slippers

  • Lambskin is the name given to sheepskin. Our selected lambskins are a waste product of the meat industry and would otherwise simply be thrown away.
  • Like sheep's wool, lambskin is self-cleaning and easy to care for.
  • You are welcome to beat out your lambskin slippers to remove dirt and dust.
  • Odours can be removed by airing them out in the fresh air.
  • Rough stains can be removed with a special lambskin brush.
  • Under no circumstances should lambskin slippers be washed in the washing machine, as the leather will warp.
  • You should also avoid extreme sunlight and heated air, as both can dry out the leather that forms the outside of the lambskin slippers.

You should avoid these care mistakes with wool slippers at all costs:

  • Wool and therefore wool slippers have no place in the dryer! Wool is a natural fibre. Wool shrinks considerably in hot weather.
  • Felt slippers should never be put in the washing machine. Our felt slippers are felted and shaped in pure spring water. If felt slippers are completely soaked again, they lose their shape.
