Children's slippers made of felt, wool or foam: which material is recommended?
Each material has its advantages, which we have briefly summarized below. In principle, it depends on the intended use and the wearer's preference as to which material suits you best. Felt: Wool felt is a very robust and durable material. Wool felt is not very flexible, as the wool is shaped during the felting process. As a result, felt stretches very little compared to woolen fabric. Nevertheless, wool felt has all the positive properties of wool. It is water-repellent, temperature-regulating and very cozy for children's feet. Wool: Wool is a natural material and is biodegradable. Wool is obtained from live sheep. We process wool into either felt or felted fabric. Compared to felt, felted fabric is much more elastic and very cuddly. Foam: Slippers made of foam are manufactured synthetically. Usually synthetic resin mixtures are used for this purpose. Foam slippers are waterproof. As our environment is important to us and we only use natural raw materials for our felt slippers for children, we do not have any foam slippers in our range.
Are children's felt slippers also suitable for summer?
Sheep's wool is temperature-regulating. This makes children's shoes made of felt perfect for both summer and winter. The temperature-regulating wool feels soft and cozy on your child's feet at any time of year. Our slippers are the perfect companion for your child in both warm and cold weather.
In which slippers will my child not get sweaty feet?
When and why should children wear slippers?
On average, children start walking between the ages of 10 and 24 months. The skin of children's feet is soft and sensitive. In order not to negatively influence the development of children's feet, it is important that the felt slippers have sufficient toe room. We also recommend a non-slip and flexible sole. All children's slippers from Gottstein are equipped with a non-slip and flexible sole. Felt slippers are suitable for your child's first steps without hesitation.
Which felt slippers are suitable for children with a high instep?
If your child has a high instep, we recommend our slippers or slippers made of felted material. Felt is a very compact, robust and inflexible material. With a high instep, it could pinch uncomfortably. In contrast, whale fabric is very elastic and flexible and adapts to every foot shape. Your child won't want to take our slippers off - they are so comfortable! We make crawling shoes for babies from our whale fabric. So that your baby's sensitive feet are lovingly cared for by our whale fabric even before they take their first steps.
Which felt slippers are suitable for wearing in kindergarten?
In our opinion, a good kindergarten shoe should be robust and have a non-slip sole. Your child's toes should be able to move freely and your child should be able to walk comfortably in the kindergarten shoe. A practical Velcro fastener or an elastic band will help your child to quickly put on and take off the slippers in kindergarten. All of our children's slippers meet these requirements. This means you are spoiled for choice when buying between many different colors and models 😉
How much felt wool is used for our children's slippers?
Depending on the size of the slipper, different amounts of felt wool are used for a children's slipper. Every year, we process several tons of wool into cosy slippers for children. Felt is not a knitted textile surface, in contrast to the felted fabric. The sheep's wool fibers are loose in a felt and are compacted through various processes. This process is also known as felting. The felting process causes the wool fibers to interlock tightly and form a closed surface. Felt is a very durable and robust material.
How do you clean and care for children's wool felt slippers?
Felt slippers clean themselves! Felt slippers for children made of wool are self-cleaning and dirt-repellent thanks to their special surface. It is sufficient to knock the felt slippers out from time to time. Coarse dirt can be gently brushed out with a brush. Should the felt slippers nevertheless have a stubborn stain, this can be easily removed with a damp cloth. You can read more about care here.
What happens if the felt slippers get wet?
Felt slippers for children made from sheep's wool should never get wet. If felt gets soaked, it becomes deformed and warped. If your child wants to enjoy their felt slippers for a long time, please make sure that the felt slipper never gets completely soaked.
How often should I check my child's shoe size?
Children's feet grow very quickly - on average 1.5 mm per month. That's 2 to 3 slipper sizes over the year. Children's feet should therefore be measured and checked at regular intervals. The shoe size is determined by measuring the distance from the toe to the heel. You can find detailed instructions here. To determine the correct shoe size, we recommend the following cycles for children:
- Children aged 1-3 years: every 3 months
- Children aged 3-6 years: every 4 months
- Children aged 6-10 years: every 5 months
Slippers that are too small can be harmful to your child's feet. That's why the right shoe size is important so that your child can walk comfortably through life.
